In response to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) backtracking on its “What did you do last week?” email requirement, the Metal Trades Department, AFL-CIO President Ed Jones issued the following statement:
“Elon Musk’s (DOGE) thoughtless communication to workers has once again confused federal employees nationwide. His lack of regard for the men and women who work hard to keep our country moving is evident in his repeated violation of their workplace rights. While federal employees were directed by their agencies and later the OPM to disregard the ‘5 things’ email,’ there appears to be continued confusion over whether they need to comply.
“It is the opinion of the Metal Trades Department that federal employees follow the chain of command of their agency and answer to their department head, not Elon Musk or DOGE. We also believe the OPM email violates the terms of the Metal Trades Council collective bargaining agreement and is, therefore, subject to effects bargaining. We strongly encourage our councils to exercise their rights.”
The Metal Trades Department has worked with its legal counsel to prepare sample materials for councils to use to address workplace violations.
